Students prepare for end of year musical

A group of students attended the West End production of Matilda: The Musical.

Waltham Toll Bar students visited the Cambridge Theatre in London to see the Roald Dahl classic brought to life through the music and lyrics of Tim Minchin.

Sixth Form student, Neve Lammin said: “We thought the show was epic and mesmerising. We are inspired to put on our production in June!”

Noah Sutherland (14) commented: “I think they put an interesting twist on the book and I’m inspired to see how we can do something similar.”

The show had the students captivated from start to finish. The Performing Arts department, a new addition to Waltham Toll Bar in September 2023, is now extremely excited to showcase the academy’s first musical in June this year.

The Academy have often presented the musical and artistic capabilities with concerts and showcase evenings demonstrating a wealth of talent across the entire school.

Principal Mr Whittle commented at their recent Year 6 Open Evening that ‘there is a wealth of talent at the academy with musicians, performers, dancers and singers. We are extremely keen to promote and celebrate our gifted students.’

Co-Director of Arts Mrs Carter commented: “We were blown away with the amount of talent when the students auditioned for the musical which made our casting decision extremely difficult. The students have been working incredibly hard during rehearsals and it is fantastic to see such enthusiasm from the students.”

The students across Waltham Toll Bar Academy and Toll Bar Sixth Form will come together in June this year to perform their version of the much loved and modern favourite musical at Parkway Cinema in Cleethorpes.

Year 7 student Will Rowe, who will play the role of Bruce Bogtrotter, said: “I loved how Bruce ate the chocolate cake. I cannot wait to play the character in our production.”

Sophie High (Y7) added: “It was exciting to see another young performer take on the role of Matilda on the West End stage and I cannot wait to do it myself.”
