Leadership skills developed

Sixteen Year 9s attended a Primary School Get Set Glow Festival as part of their Level One Sport Leaders’ training.

The Waltham Tollbar Academy students meet every Monday night and are taught a structured qualification.

The course is designed to use sport and physical activity to help young people develop and hone their leadership skills whilst helping themselves and others stay physically active.

As part of the qualification, each leader demonstrates their leadership ability by leading others.

Waltham Toll Bar Academy has strong links with the community and regularly assist and support events alongside the North East Lincolnshire Sports Development Partnership Team.

Sixteen primary schools participated in the Festival of Light event with the aim of raising participation levels amongst primary school children and making them more active and confident across a range of physical activities.

The ‘Get Glowing’ Festivals are held in a dark sports hall with specialist illuminous equipment creating a fantastic and exciting atmosphere for those involved.

Teacher Graham Dilks said: “All of the Sport Leaders were a credit to the academy as they engaged with the children and staff, guiding and leading children through a carousel of activities.

There were many tired leaders at the end of the day.

This is the first of a number of leadership days that the students will be involved in as they work towards this valuable extra qualification.”

Principal at Waltham Toll Bar Academy, Mr Whittle, said: “It’s terrific to see Year 9s taking part in the primary school festival and benefiting from the Sport Leaders’ training.

It’s just one of the opportunities offered at the Academy, supporting students to become confident, well-rounded individuals, ready for the challenges ahead.”
