A celebration for King Charles III

Creative Arts students have worked hard in creating different forms of artwork for the Coronation exhibition.

Year 10 students Lola-Grace Hutchinson, Harry Edwards and Ava Wright with their portraits of King Charles III.

To celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III this week, they were asked to produce artwork that was ‘fit for a King’.

They made some terrific pieces using a huge amount of imagination and great techniques.

Photography students created collages using different photos of King Charles throughout his life, leading up to his Coronation this weekend.

Teacher of Creative Arts, Miss Blendell said: “Year 10 photography class were inspired by David Hockney when creating their montages. We’ve seen some fantastic work from them with this project.”

Art students were asked to draw realistic portraitures of King Charles using their grid method, resulting in confident and sophisticated pieces of work.

Harry Edwards (Y10) said: “I really enjoyed working on the portrait. We used the grid system which helped me a lot and gave me the confidence to carry on drawing in more detail.”

Ava Wright (Y10) added: “I enjoyed working on our portraits of King Charles. I really enjoyed the lessons that we spent on them.”

Students were also asked to produce an array of artwork inspired by graphic artist and illustrator, Martin O’Neil. They used printing methods with real flowers in Miss Wright’s Art Club to create a display of the symbolic blooms of Britain including roses, thistles, shamrocks and daffodils.

Miss Wright explained: “During a series of Art Club sessions, I taught a mixture of Year 7 and 8s how to create relief prints inspired by the Coronation logo using flowers and poly press. The students really enjoyed learning how to create different types of prints.”

Art Technician, Mrs Radley said: “Year 7 loved getting involved and using their imagination in drawing the flowers free hand, which gave them freedom to be inventive with their designs.”

Teacher of Creative Arts, Miss Blendell said: “It created great discussion amongst the students as we discussed the significance of symbolism within royalty with Year 9. We discussed what they were choosing to add to their pieces and why.

Students in Year 7 have been helping with the celebrations by writing their own poems about the King. These have also been incorporated into the display.

All of their hard work has made a vibrant and colourful display in the reception area of Waltham Toll Bar Academy.

Principal, Nigel Whittle said: “The display looks fantastic and it’s a great way for our students to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles. I am impressed by the imagination of our students and their skills are something we are incredibly proud of at the Academy.

I would also like to wish His Majesty King Charles a wonderful Coronation on behalf of the staff and students at Waltham Toll Bar Academy.”
