Tollbar Academy Principal Caroline Yates, who took over the helm in September 2018, with TMAT Chief Executive David Hampson (centre) and Chair Philip Bond. The Academy is the top performing secondary school in the region, according to the latest DoE figures.

Tollbar Academy has been ranked as the best performing secondary school in North East Lincolnshire following its summer 2018 GCSE results.

Students at the Outstanding Academy scored the highest according to the Attainment 8 measure, which is made up from average scores across eight subjects studied at GCSE level.

It was found students came out with an average score of 51.8 in Attainment 8 - putting it ahead of Humberston Academy on 51.7.

The results, which have been released by the Department for Education, show the UK's average Attainment 8 score is 46.4.

Caroline Yates, Principal of Tollbar Academy, said: "I am absolutely delighted that Tollbar has yet again been recognised as a top performing secondary school in the local area.

"Tollbar recorded the highest average points score per student at GCSE in 2018. This is testament to the dedication of staff and the hard work of students."

According to exam board AQA, a student's Attainment 8 score is calculated by adding up their points from their eight GCSE subjects and then dividing them by 10.

The eight GCSE subjects can fit into three groups including English and Maths, English Baccalaureate (Ebacc), and open group.

David Hampson, Chief Executive of Tollbar Multi Academy Trust, said: "I am very proud of the achievements of the students at Tollbar Academy who were able to attain such good results in 2018.

"Tollbar Academy has proved over many years that it can achieve the highest possible outcomes for young people. The successful formula at Tollbar Academy has been replicated across the Trust and drives the continuing improvements seen in all of our schools as indicated by our recent good judgment from Ofsted at Somercotes Academy.

"It is also particularly pleasing to note that the success at Tollbar has been achieved with a high proportion of students being entered for the full Ebacc suite of qualifications illustrating the Trust's commitment to delivering a quality and broad academic curriculum."

The results also show how much progress students have made between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4, based on Progress 8 scores. Tollbar Academy's Progress 8 score came out as 0.32, which is well above average compared to other secondary schools across the UK.
