Tollbar Student Becomes England 800m Junior Champion

Tollbar Academy Year 9 student Ella Greenway (14) with her England 800m Junior Champion medal.

Tollbar Academy student Ella Greenway (14) is the new England 800m Junior Champion following a superb performance at the English Schools' Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The event is the fourth largest athletics event in the world and showcases some of the best athletes in each county in England. Nearly all of the British Olympic Athletics team members have featured in the ESAA Championships, many of which have gone on to win individual Olympic and World Championship medals, including multiple gold medallists Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Kelly Holmes and Greg Rutherford.

The Year 9 student is now ranked number one in the UK for her age group and hopes to represent her country when she is old enough next year. A member of Cleethorpes Athletics Club, her final was streamed live over the internet last week. Heats and semi finals took place on Friday and the final was on Saturday. Ella won in 2mins 9secs. Her personal best is 2 mins 08secs.

Also ranked at number two in the UK for the Junior 1500m, Ella was thrilled with her performance. "This is the biggest race I have ever won and I cannot wait to get the chance to compete for England," she said.

Amy Gowshall, Curriculum Leader for P.E. at Tollbar Academy, said: "We are so very proud of Ella. She made a fantastic contribution to the Academy's win at the Grimsby and District Athletics Championships last week and then to go on and win this. She is a future star in the making."
