A former Head Chef at the award-winning The Ship Inn at Barnoldby-Le-Beck is impressing students at Tollbar Academy with a new array of dishes after joining Aspens as its Catering Manager.

Adrian Wakefield is aiming to provide restaurant-quality food for the students at school meal prices, and wants to continue to build upon the national trend for healthier school meals.

Following a year as a sous chef at The Ship Inn, including four months as Head Chef, the father of four joined Aspens Catering, who are responsible for school meals across Tollbar Multi Academy Trust. He has previously worked as a sous chef at the Humber Royal, and at Stallingborough Grange and Harvey's Wine Bar, after qualifying from Grimsby Institute 14 years ago.

He said: "There is no doubt that school meals have been improving over the last decade with campaigns by people like Jamie Oliver. I want to bring the a la carte ethic to school meals so that the students are getting restaurant quality food but at affordable prices. The way to do that is to work cleverly with recipes and to pretty much make everything ourselves."

Adrian took up his new post before Christmas and has received very positive feedback from students. "They all seem to be enjoying the new food and I have noticed that more teachers are using the Sixth Form cafe, which I suspect means they are enjoying the food too," he said.

Theme days are planned over the coming months, including French, Spanish, Italian and Greek meals.
